Timothy Snyder dlouhodobě upozorňuje na hamižnost a rozpínavost Ruska. Neúnavně to popisuje ve svých knihách a kontext vysvětluje na četných přednáškách. Za přínos pro diplomacii nyní obdržel medaili z rukou českého ministra zahraničí Jana Lipavského (Piráti). „Ukazuje nám, proč a jak bychom měli bránit svobodu a demokracii,“ říkal ministr, když ocenění americkému historikovi uděloval.
